She inspired me to write a little about MLK.

Yesterday, some of you had the day off (sorry for those who didn’t). However, how many actually took the time to reflect on the meaning rather than the holiday. Some of you got to do anything else than work or go to school. Last year, while still at college, we didn’t have Martin Luther King, Jr. Day off. In fact, school ran right as schedule except: we had a terrible Ice Storm. So, no one could go anywhere.

Like last year, I reflected yesterday on some moments on the lessons provided by Dr. King. Being from the Caribbean, I feel very proud that such a man existed to pave the way for Civil Rights. Who’d imagine, during his time, that he’d pave the way for this centuries remarkable moments including, first African American democratic hopeful – senator Barack Obama, don’t worry I won’t get into politics.

I think I also owe MLK for paving the way for better paying jobs/opportunities for all people, not just blacks. However, I don’t think that I would have been able to get into this field without someone like him who shared his incredible dream to the world. The speech can be read at the U. S. Info Website. His dream was equal opportunities for all men, women, “black, whites, Jews, Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics.”

It’s a little sad that some people still think that MLK was just for blacks, including a “Celebration of Soul Food” at a certain private institution – however that’s another story. His true mission, was to “raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement.” “His vision was for change that was more revolutionary than mere reform: he cited systematic flaws of racism, poverty, militarism and materialism, and that ‘reconstruction of society itself is the real issue to be faced.'” Read More Here.
