I took awhile to write about my presentation at the school I presented at on the Bronx. I went there last Friday for career day and met with students in grades k-8th. I was invited by my cousin.

The people presenting had professions from choreographer, lawyer to FBI agent. There were probably a total of 8 or 9 professionals. I was the senior interactive graphic designer for an advertising agency.

I was assigned a seat next to the fireman initially. I did forget his name. We exchanged brief greetings and were asked whether we could come downstairs to listen to the keynote speaker. I was very curious as to whom that would be. To no ones surprise it was the FBI agent. The students were extremely excited about this and I thought to myself, great how am I going to make my career look cooler than an FBI agent. The truth is: I don’t think it is. I would love to be an FBI Agent. So I took a photo of the students and contemplated a scheme of how I’d make my job look so tremendously cool.

I went back upstairs at the place I was assigned and did a quick comp in photoshop to explain that my job as a designer was to communicate information to the audience that the brand caters to. I realized that just seemed dull so I took out my sketchbook. It had the words, “I draw pictures all day,” on it. I do draw in meetings and brainstorms so I wouldn’t be lying. I placed it on the desk. The students would probably just think it’s cool that I draw at all… Besides that’s what I did all through school, I drew.

I didn’t have access to the Internet so I opened my hard drive and opened a game that I had made in college [link]

I also thought of what to tell the students. They loved what I presented and was even in awe when I sketched one of them.

It went better than I thought.
