I came across this movie’s trailer a few weeks ago and I’m surprised it didn’t get as much air as The Social Network Movie. I think all of my friends who see this movie will enjoy it… or it will make you think. It’s pretty difficult to hate this movie.

Before I get into my review I will tell you a funny story of mine that happened to me when I was probably 11 or 12 years old in a yahoo chatroom. The movie Catfish sort of brought back the memory:

I was in a Christian Chartroom (because I assumed it would be safe), the irony is that I lied about my age to  be there — I wasn’t 13 as yet, and I met this young man who was probably 14 years old. His profile photo looked like a model’s but I really didn’t care about looks back then because I was barely a teenager and my hobbies didn’t allow me to be the least bit curious about sexuality. We talked about his life in the U. S. I was living in the Virgin Islands back then and it was interesting to just bond with someone near my age like a pen-pal. We spoke for months on a daily basis, just summarizing our day (yes pretty innocent) in terms of school and family life, etc. Then he disappeared for weeks. I did miss chatting but eventually I found other things to do so not seeing him online didn’t mean much after awhile. However, one day he popped up. I contacted him and asked him what happened, how he’s been, etc. He started apologizing and said he had to come out and say the truth. He was very sorry for lying to me. At first, I assumed that maybe he wasn’t who he said he was or that he was a creepy old man preying on kids (that was pretty regular back then). However, he admitted that he wasn’t a boy — he was a girl instead, and that she understands if I don’t ever speak to her again. She would also send her “real” photo — which was a chubby little girl with red hair. I didn’t mind that either but I did ask why she lied about herself. She couldn’t explain why but said she decided to tell the truth because she is trying to be a good Christian. The rest of her messages seemed hesitant to give a clearer explanation so we sort of parted ways after that day.

Back to Catfish, my story is nothing as dramatic as this movie.

First off, the main character is totally hot (great smile)! His name is Yaniv (Nev) Schulman and he’s a photographer. I looked him up to make sure that he’s real. He has a twitter account @nevschulman

Also, because I’m pretty ballsy, I tweeted at him.

This is the brief summary of Catfish on rotten tomatoes:

In late 2007, filmmakers Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost sensed a story unfolding as they began to film the life of Ariel’s brother, Nev. They had no idea that their project would lead to the most exhilarating and unsettling months of their lives. A reality thriller that is a shocking product of our times, Catfish is a riveting story of love, deception and grace within a labyrinth of online intrigue.

As usual, I don’t want to ruin movies if they are pretty new.  I predicted what would happen however, I didn’t predict how they would handle the situation. That part was very shocking to me. I’m still not sure whether this entire thing is “real” because of the ending but it’s a definite must see movie. It might change some of your opinions of what you share and who you add to your account. Also, now you will understand why I insist on meeting people before adding them to my facebook account :).

Let me know what you think when you see it!
