Are you suffering from Facebook withdrawal?

Do you find yourself constantly checking updates?

From your phone, from your inbox, from your AIR feeds?
Do you feel an obligation to see what Jane Doe is doing?
Whether or not she is in a relationship with that same guy she was connected to on her profile a week before?
Whether or not she said something meaningful or her life is falling apart due to quarter life crisis?

Are you easily addicted to games from Zynga like farmville, Mafia Wars, Cafe world, etc?

Do you request invites from people just to get a Cow added to your farm?

Do you check the deactivate box just to log back in a few days later? The next day? A Couple Hours?

If you any of those sound like you, then this post is for you.

I decided to activate a browser plug in the other day because I realized that my facebook friends list was fluctuating. I wouldn’t have cared too much about it because I know that people delete each other constantly but for a very odd reason my friends list numbers would increase without me adding anyone new. I found that odd.

The plug in alerted me when someone deleted or hid their profile. This was sort of fun for me because I noticed who those people were. Also, some of them I hadn’t chatted with in awhile so it was nice to observe. When they reactivated, I sent them a message if I was logged into facebook at the time (the plug-in is quite stalkerish).

There was another alert when someone simply deletes you (instead of hiding — sorry I don’t have that screen shot).

So these are my thoughts:

If you’re deactivating your profile just to avoid facebook’s overwhelming amount of content only to log back in to reactivate… After you’ve “had it!” Then you obviously have a problem (sorry)… I use facebook to contact a great deal of people that I don’t have in my address book instead of programming your numbers or email addresses in my phone — or to remember names haha. Can you really blame me? However, since you are addicts…

Follow these steps to get you through if you’re overwhelm:

  1. Too many emails? Control what email you receive from facebook here.
  2. If you have privacy issues go here to change them in your settings.
  3. You can also control who sees what on your wall or photos here with Friends List.
  4. The most important thing is to control what emails you get! Avoid getting notified for EVERYTHING.

I’m sure I might have found facebook overwhelming if I didn’t work with online related services. Social is a big part of my industry so I have to be on. Even if I don’t want to check my messages, I have to use client’s like pages for research or design. So, I personally do not have a reason to be off.

Cheers hope it works for you šŸ™‚
